ANTS
One of the most common species of ants that will invade properties in our area is the Argentine ant. Argentine ants, like most ants, are nuisance pests and do not pose serious threats to people or property. The large size of their colonies and multiple nesting sites make ants formidable pests.

PREVENTION: Get rid of easy access to food sources. Make sure outdoor trashcans and compost bins have tight-fitting lids. Pick up uneaten pet food between feedings
SPIDERS
Most species of spiders, such as house spiders and wolf spiders, are harmless nuisance pests as their venom is not strong enough to cause significant health issues in people. A species of spider living in our area that is a danger is the black widow spider, which has venom strong enough to trigger health problems in people.
PREVENTION: Limit their access to your property, trim back overgrown shrubs and bushes from the exterior. Inspect your exterior and repair any opening around windows and doors or in the foundation or exterior walls. Removing piles of rocks, wood, and other debris.
COCKROACHES
Cockroaches are a resilient, ancient species of insects that live throughout most of the world. A few of the most common species of cockroaches living in our area are the American cockroach, German cockroach, and Oriental cockroach. All three species can invade any home or business, creating problems for people. Cockroaches contaminate food, food prep areas, dishes, utensils, and surfaces with the bacteria, human pathogens, and parasites that they carry on their legs and bodies. Cockroaches are dangerous pests and should never be allowed on your property.
CRICKETS
Crickets are a type of insect identified by their long antennae and the large, powerful back legs they use for jumping. Crickets generally live outside in damp moist areas; however, these insects occasionally move inside when the weather becomes too harsh for them. These insects chew houseplants and fabric items like upholstered furniture, rugs, wallpaper, and fabric.

PREVENTION: Put door sweeps on exterior doors - especially basement doors. Keep garage doors closed. Inspect plants for crickets.
EARWIGS
Earwigs are the stuff of nightmares and urban legends. With pincers, two sets of wings, and slender, dark-colored bodies measuring up to an inch long, these nocturnal creatures can look intimidating, and their pincers are only for self-defense against other insects. If an earwig does happen to “pinch” you, you won’t get sick or feel pain. However, these pests will damage your garden and house plants.

SILVERFISH
Silverfish love dark, humid and damp spaces such as laundry rooms, basements, and bathrooms. Their favorite foods are starch, cellulose, and sugar. They can be found in cardboard, paper, coffee, sugar, pasta, and other leftover food.
Silverfish are not a harmful pest and pose no long-term health effects. But left unchecked in your home, they can cause a lot of damage to clothing, books, and other paper items.
